Introduction

Kynton Mynnar village falls under Sohiong C&RD Block of East Khasi Hills in the state of Meghalaya. The village lies at a distance of 13 kilometers from block headquarters Sohiong and 40 kilometers from district and state capital Shillong. It falls under Hima Mylliem Syiemship with a total geographical area of 340 hectares and a total population of 430 from 85 households. Land owner here is primarily clan, with the clans of Kharbuki, Langbnang and Kharkrang being predominant. Historically, the village was said to be formed around the year 1943 as narrated by the elder village folks.

Activities

1. First Contact

Dated: December 2018

The first contact with Kynton Mynnar was established in December 2018 at a Joint Meeting at Kreit village since the two villages lie in close proximity with each other. It was attended by the executive members of the Dorbar Shnong of both the villages. CLLMP officials briefed them about the project and its tenets. Subsequently, another meeting was held at Sohiong Block Office in January 2019 and it was attended by representatives of all the villages in Sohiong falling under CLLMP.

2. Sensitisation Programme & Ground Truthing

Dated: 12th February 2019

The first sensitisation of CLLMP held at the village coincided with a visit by World Bank officials on the 12th of February, 2019. There were also members from Sadhana Forest, an NGO based in Pondicherry, focussing on reforestation and food security in arid areas. Also in attendance were project officials from SPMU along with the DPMU team. There was a good turn out by the residents of Kynton Mynnar; there were around 150 residents present. Banners of the map and the village were displayed and reports circulated to give the officials from World Bank and Sadhana Forest an understanding of the village. World Bank officials spent some time interacting with the residents and shared a light hearted moment with them.

 

2.1. Formation of VNRMC

The executive committee of the Dorbar Shnong of Kyrphei after a meeting was formed by the members of VNRMC on the 28th of December, 2018.

3. Opening of Bank Account

The opening of bank account was initiated after the village signed the EoI (Expression of Interest), VGA (Village Grant Agreement) and the Citizen’s Green Charter. Kynton Mynnar opened their bank account on February 2019.

Book Keeping Training

The Finance & Accounts Official of DPMU, East Khasi Hills, CLLMP, conducted the Simple Book Keeping Training on the 29th of June, 2019 at Kynton Mynnar village.

4. PRA Exercise

Dated: 9th June, 2019

The Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) exercise aims to incorporate the knowledge and opinions of the community in the planning and management of development projects and programmes. PRA exercise at Kynton Mynnar was conducted on the 29th of June, 2019. A total of 30 residents took part in this exercise.

Findings

  • There are six clan forests in the village
  • There are three springs: Umbehpor, Umpakra, Umbah. They are used domestically for drinking and washing.
  • There are plenty of indigenous trees found here; Khasi: Kseh Bilat, Diengngan, Diengsohum
  • There are three rivers: Wah Umiam, Wah Ujop, Wah Lyngkein. They are used for irrigation.
  • There are also medicinal plants in the clan forests

5. Training on the Development of the Community Natural Resource Management Plan (CNRMP)

A comprehensive one-day training and existing CNRMP review for the VNRMC executive members under all the villages under East Khasi Hills was organised on the 2nd of December, 2019 by the DPMU team. A copy of the environmental templates along with the boundary maps were also circulated to the members and explanation to the templates were made accordingly.

The executive members of the VNRMC took a chance to review their current plans and also fill out the data in the new templates.

 

BDO Visit

The Block Development Officer of Sohiong, Shri M. Challam, along with his team from the Block Office visited Kynton Mynnar and visited the sites for Nursery and Check Dam. The Junior Engineer from the Block interacted with the project officials from East Khasi Hills and also took the measurements and technical specifications of the proposed intervention sites.

Introduction

Kreit Village falls under Sohiong C&RD Block of East Khasi Hills in the state of Meghalaya. The village lies at a distance of 20 kilometers from block headquarters Sohiong and 59 kilometers from district and state capital Shillong. It falls under Hima Mylliem Syiemship with a total geographical area of 71 hectares and a total population of 565 from 97 households. The land system here is predominantly private.

Activities
  1. First Contact 

Dated: December 2018

The first contact with Kreit was established in December 2018 at a Joint meeting with Kynton Mynnar at Kreit village itself since the two villages lie in close proximity with each other. It was attended by the executive members of the Dorbar Shnong of both the villages. CLLMP officials briefed them about the project and its tenets. Subsequently, another meeting was held at Sohiong Block Office in January 2019 and it was attended by representatives of all the villages in Sohiong falling under CLLMP.

2. Sensitization Programme

Dated: 2nd October 2019

The first sensitisation of CLLMP held at the village was conducted on the 2nd of October, 2019. This was also a chance for them to review their CNRMP.  In this meeting, all of the project officials spoke about   their roles and responsibilities towards the project. A documentary of Kyrphei village as well as the land degradation video was also screened on this day.

Prior to this, project officials had visited Kreit twice to settle a concern about a probable land dispute with another village.

The executive committee of the Dorbar Shnong of Kreit after a meeting formed the members of VNRMC on December, 2018.

3.Opening of Bank Account

  Dated: March 2019

Introduction

Kyrphei village falls under Mawphlang C&RD Block of East Khasi Hills District in the state of Meghalaya. The village lies at a distance of 18 km from Mawphlang, the block headquarter and 42 km from the state capital Shillong. It falls under Hima Mylliem Syiemship with a total geographical area of 1210.70 hectares and a total population of 734 with 146 households.

Activities

1. Ground Truthing

Dated:  December 2018

The district project management unit (DPMU) of East Khasi Hills District met with Mr. Wilfringson Umdor, the village Secretary  of Kyrphei village, in December 2018 for Ground Truthing. He informed the team regarding the current scenario of the landscape and the natural resource management in the village.

 

Case Findings

  1. The village has 146 HH. Out of which 59 HHs belong to the below poverty line (BPL) category.
  2. It has an actively performing VEC.
  3. Stone quarrying is prevalent in certain areas in the village.
  4. The village has five Community Forests, one river and six springs..
  5. The major crops of the village are potato, cabbage and tapioca are cultivated here.

 

2. Sensitization Programme

Dated: January 2019

The sensitization programme was conducted in January 2019 at the Community Hall of Kyrphei village. The programme was chaired by the headman of the village, Mr. Nongbet. Around 150 community members attended the sensitization programme.

The Assistant Deputy Project Manager (ADPM) of East Khasi Hills, Mr. Pynshngain Rymmai gave a brief introduction on Community Led Landscape Management Project (CLLMP) and its various components. He stressed on the importance of community participation while implementing the project and a few social aspects such as women participation, gender equality, etc.

 

 

Signing of documents: The village signed the Expression of Interest (EOI), the Village Grant Agreement (VGA) and Green Charter followed by the selection of candidates for the Village Natural Resource Management Committee (VNRMC). The Village Executive Committee (VEC) and the entire community carried out the procedure and elected the members of the VNRMC on 28th of December, 2018.

Formation of the VNRMC: The VNRMC was formed on the  28th of December, 2018. The community members chose the President, the Secretary and the other executive members of the committee.

 

 

3. Opening of bank account

Dated: 13th March 2019

The opening of bank account was initiated after the village signed the EOI (Expression of Interest), VGA (Village Grant Agreement) and the Citizen’s Green Charter.  A training on book keeping was provided to them by Miss Balarihun Kharpuri, Programme Associate (Finance and Procurement) of East Khasi Hills, CLLMP, after the opening of bank account.

 

 

4. PRA Exercise

Dated: 13th December 2019

The Participatory Rural Appraisal exercise aims to incorporate the knowledge and opinion of the community in the planning and management of developmental projects and programmes. PRA exercise at Kyrphei was conducted on the 30th of December 2019. A total of 30 community members  took part in this exercise.

 

5. Training on the Development of the Community Resource Management Plan (CNRMP)

Dated: 13th December 2019

The DPMU East Khasi Hills District organized a  one-day training on  the development of  CNRMP plans for all the VNRMCs that were formed in  the district. During the training, a  copy of the environmental templates along with the boundary maps were also circulated to the members.

 

6. A Visit to Kyrphei Village by a Team from Arghyam

Dated: 11th July 2019

Along with members of the SPMU and other district team members, Arghyam, a Bangalore based organization with specialization in water security visited Kyrphei village on the 11th of July, 2019. An interactive session with the community members was held. The team also visited the completed intervention sites (Check Dam, Afforestation, Community Nursery, Spring Chamber) in the village.

 

7. World Bank Country Operations Manager’s visit to Kyrphei village

World Bank Country Operations Manager(COM) for India, Mr. Hisham Abdo visited the village on the 20th of September 2019. The Block Development Officer of Mawphlang and her technical team were also in attendance. A cultural song and dance performance by the residents of Kyrphei was presented which was followed by a review of the work done by CLLMP in the village. He spent some time talking to the people and listening to some of the grievances faced by them. He then visited the sites of Langeitsim (Spring) and Wahjatper (Check dam).

 

8. Video Documentary

Subsequently, a documentary was shot at Kyrphei village by the Knowledge Management personnel of East Khasi Hills, DPMU. Shooting of the documentary began in August 2019 and the video was completed and screened in the village on the 19th of September, 2019.
