  1. THE Danal Attewakgre VILLAGE

The Danal Attewakgre village is in Songsak C&RD Block of East Garo Hills district in Meghalaya. This village is inhabited by Garo Community with 43 households with N/A populations. The VNRMC in this village was formed in the month of 20TH Aug 2020. The village is 6KM from Rongjeng Block and 50 KM for the district headquarter Williamnagar. The Land Use Land Cover (LULC) map of the village identified GPS co-ordinates of 25.707905 and 90.509083 for latitude and longitude respectively. The village elevation reading is 282.05msl.

  1. The Village Resources

2.1 The Social Resources

The land is owned by a clan which is called 'Nokma A'King land' .The main institutions in the village are the Nokma, the Village Employment Council (VEC), and 1 Self Help Groups. Firewood is the main source of fuel requirement for everyone in the village, with only 43 households using LPG. The village has good electricity connectivity, with 42 households being electrified. There is also one L.P and U.p School in their village , one anganwandi center and no sub center in their area.

2.2 Natural resources

The Danal Attewakgre village has total of 597 Ha of geographical area of which the total forest cover area and also open forest is 252.51 Ha. Water bodies’ coverage is 2.98 Ha. The village has Agricultural land measuring 21.32 Ha and 143.56 Ha of cultivable wasteland. Arecanut plantation is the major cash crop in the village.

2.3 Type of Forest Cover and Wildlife in Danal Attewakgre Village

The village also has a forest covering an area of 252.51 hectares, The varieties of trees are Watre, Wanok, Boldak (Schima wallichi), Tebret, Bolgipok (Gmelina-arborea), Bolsal (Shorea-robusta), Agatchi (Dillenia-Pentagyna), Gambare, Kimbal, Segun (Teak), Sillangre, Bolchim (Duabanga-grandiflora), and Bolbok. The villagers have agreed to work towards improving this open forest. Additionally, the village has a dense forest covering approximately 36.7 hectares of land. This forest cover includes seven major indigenous fruit and non-fruit bearing species, namely Michelia Champaco, Aegle marmelos, Schima Wallichii, Kelu, Dalbergia Sissoo, Dillenia Indica, and Jackfruit.

2.4 Cultivable Land

The village has 149.72 Ha of areas under agricultural, horticultural, and plantation land, as well as approximately 30.1 Ha of Jhum land.

2.5 Water Bodies

The village has 7 springs and 2 Streams in the village which are perennial. The water discharge from these springs reduces drastically during the lean season. Development of spring-shed approach in the village along with rejuvenation activities such as afforestation, contour and staggered trenches in the catchment areas benefiting to about 5.85 ha of land that would help in increasing the discharge both peak and lean season catering to 5 households and reduced drudgery, especially of women. The following names are :- Dogru, Attewak chiring, Attewak bisik 1, Chimatchok, Attewak bisik 3, Dobakol bisik 2, Dobakol bipek, Kantare/Kantasi bipek, Surak Chiring, Chiring Bolpu, Atewak Bima. These water bodies are used for domestic and irrigation purposes.

2.6 Spring Inventory

At the time of VNRMC Plan preparation the Master Trainer has taken the discharge measurement of Danal Attewakgre spring : latitude 25.706195°N and longitude 90.516643 °E with elevation of 294.41 m. The water of the spring is used for drinking and for domestic purposes. Spring discharge was calculated 3.125 LPM through stop watch- bucket method. The pH value of the spring is 7.1 LPM.

  1. Problem Analysis

The above village resource data collected through GIS technology, primary data collection made through CNRMP template and Spring Inventory templates suggests that the village is still rich in natural resources. At the same time natural resource degradation has started in the village that need planned actions and interventions. The area of open forest is increasing. This is due to Jhum cultivation, cutting down trees for timber, firewood and for other plantation, etc. for immediate economic benefit. These has been resulted in less water discharge of water from springs and rivers which has been brought about low moisture content in the ground, loss of soil fertility and low crop production.

  1. Community Natural Resource Management Plan with estimation

Having understood the natural resources in this village were foreseen the upcoming threats to land, water and forest, the Villagers and VEC members of the village came together on 20th Aug 2020 to identify and plan out interventions to address challenges faced in their village both in terms of NRM issues and their economic issues. The VEC with facilitation from DPMU-EGH and SPMU and the villagers strongly feel that these interventions would enable them to conserve and improve the natural resources for them and their future generations.

  1. Brief Justification on the Proposed Activities

Community Nursery

The proposed nursery is meant for raising the saplings which will be planted in the open forest, catchment areas, reserve forest, and private land The following saplings are being raised in the nursery Gambil, Bolchim, Chram, Bolgibok, Bolbret, Chambil, Tegatchu, Tebrong, Cheng & Letchu.

Composting

The villagers have also proposed to improve land productivity in around 143.56 Ha of agricultural land using composting so that the soil will be more fertile and that healthy plants in return would fetch more productivity leading to increased income.

Plantation/Afforestation/Reforestation

The village has only open forest in village which is about 288.51 ha. Villagers have realized that open forests are increasing which leads to climate change and loss of biodiversity. The villagers have decided to Afforestation or reforestation & Agro-forestry both in the open forests as well as in the private land which brings to a total of 10.1 ha of land. It is advice to encourage the villagers to plant fruit bearing trees while carrying out reforestation for the benefits of all fauna and humankind .It will also restore and maintain balance in biodiversity.

Check Dam

Since there is unavailability of irrigation facilities during the month of February to April and the land become less productive, villagers have proposed 2 nos of check dam Dobakkol Bipek Community,Attewak chiring Commmunity to be constructed for irrigation and domestic purpose from which around 21 households will be benefiting from it. It is expected that 9 ha of land will be benefiting from this structures. Availability of water throughout the season can help the villagers to practice multiple cropping and follow crop rotation throughout the year which will increase the production and their income as well.

Forest Management Plan

The village has a Reserve forest which has been preserved by the community but due to extraction of timber by the villager themselves now it is consider as open forest. After the villagers realized that open forests are increasing which leads to climate change and loss biodiversity . The wanted to reclaim the forest which is around 4ha to be brought under forest management plan which further increase its forest cover, take more preventive measures, etc. FMP and PES has been register in Community Forest. The activities of FMP are Nursery for Food Forestry,Boundary Survey,Forest Fire Control,In- Situ and Ex-Situ Conservation,Enrichmnt in Forest Blanks ,Assisted Natural regeneration in Open Forest.

Gabion Wall/Gully plug

The village has constructed a Gabion wall at Attewak Spring & Kamtasi Spring in order to control soil erosion. The village has in order to control land sliding on road sides and also to prevent the water logging area from further destruction. This has prevent blockage of road ,soil erosion etc.
