VILLAGE OVERVIEW

Nongpathaw Village under Sohiong block is at a distance of about 20 kilometers from District Headquarters Shillong. With a population of 551 from 210 Households, the village lies in close proximity with Umiam Lake. Land ownership is primarily clan and community with few being private. The majority of the populace is involved in agriculture. Some of the chief crops cultivated here are potato, radish, tapioca, peas and radish. Besides this, wild vegetables like Jatira, Jamyrdoh, celery, yam etc. are found in abundance. Traditional modes of farming as well as shifting cultivation are practiced in the village. The farmers utilise both organic (cow dung, dry leaves) as well inorganic (urea) fertilisers.

INTERPRETATIONS

Traditional and Indigenous Practitioners in the Village people

Due to the unavailability of hospitals or medical sub centers nearby, the people mostly rely on traditional healing and midwives if the need is urgent. Another reason is because these traditional practitioners are cost effective. In major cases, people do refer themselves to hospitals. This tells about the importance of these practitioners in the village.

Government Schemes availed in the village

Major schemes like MGNREGA, ICDS and SSA are the most active in the village in terms of regularity and services. The Mid –day meal is also available in the village but its availability varies from time to time which counts to once or twice a week. Another scheme that is available is the MDC/MLA scheme which they receive before elections. The study interprets that the population of the village are highly dependent on schemes and services provided by the Government.

Indigenous Food available

The village has a rich source of indigenous food which tells us they use the benefits that nature has given them to a great extent.

Women Participation in the Village

Through the baseline study, the village shows equal participation of women in the village. They hold important positions in the Village Employment Committee and take part actively in the Dorbar.

Problems and Challenges faced by the people in the village

There are numerous problems in the village but the FGD identified three important issues:

  1. The problem of water scarcity which is caused due to deforestation, forest fires and other man-made disasters.

  2. The problem of unavailability of health centers in and on the village which makes their accessibility to health related issues difficult.

  3. The problem of roads and transportation due to poor services rendered in the village. This indicates that there are major problems that need to be taken care of in the village which are far more important.

Numbers of CBO/ SHGs/ CLUBS in the Village

The village is constituted of youth groups, women’s groups, sports club and village defence party. All of them are functioning actively and act as contributors to the well-being of the village. The existence of diverse groups shows that the village has a strong participation from its members.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT IN THE VILLAGE

The study shows that the village does meet and work together as a community during sports and cleaning drive.

Public Distribution System

With one Fair Price Shop, the ownership of ration card varies. The village consists of both people belonging to the BPL and APL category that enjoys the benefits of fair price system at an affordable price. The findings also show that there is irregularity in distribution of the commodities like kerosene and sugar.

Marketability of Crops

From the findings, it is shown that they market their produce twice a week and the distance is 40 kms. This shows that people depending on agriculture as a livelihood highly depend on these two days.

Seasonal crops cultivated

The finding shows that the village is rich in terms of seasonal crops. The village also markets these crops which is indicative that they possess adequate seasonal crops for consumption.

Numbers of Local Market

The local market is held once in four days.

LAND USE PATTERN

The landholdings show that majority is owned by the clan and the community. Very less is owned by individuals. This leaves the village system in the distribution of land to be fair and easier to work in case of any major work is to be done in the village.

The village being situated in the rural area is still very rich in their natural resources in comparison with that of their urban counterparts.

In terms of resources, the village has rich natural resources which consist of agricultural land, streams and ponds. This shows the positive relationship of the people and the nature around them. They also have the essential manmade resources like schools, ICDS centre, playground, bus sheds and water tanks which are widely used by the community.

The findings from the natural disasters, tells that the agricultural activities in the village are highly affected by strong winds and hailstorms which limits their productivity and also affecting livelihood. Coming to manmade disaster, forest a fire is majorly practiced affecting the running flow of water and land fertility.

A large number of wild flora and fauna are also found in this village which tells that they are practicing the protection and preservation of wild vegetation and wildlife.

The types of trees are found in large number but only two types are those that help in water discharge which interprets that they need to develop more of trees for spring discharge so that their problem of water scarcity could be resolved.

WATER SOURCES

From the findings, it can be interpreted that water supply is a problem in the village. They only have enough water during the monsoon season where as during the other months, they face problem. The PHE supply also comes once in a day for 1-2 hours. The finding has clearly stated that there is water scarcity in the area.

ENVIRONMENT

During the discussion, they stated that the environment to them is the nature and its surroundings which constitutes of both the living and the non-living.

In terms of protecting the environment they shared that the trees are planted every now and then but there are also wild ones that grows at their own pace. They also practice the traditional method of waste management which is burning. This shows that they have not been made aware of the danger of the carbon fumes emitted by the burning of disposed garbage.

During the discussion on mining, they highlighted that they do practice quarry mining but only in times of need and not for sale. This tells that they are putting controlled measures towards quarry mining.

With regards to deforestation, since the majority of the forests belongs to different clans, therefore they distribute these trees amongst themselves and these forests have been claimed to grow trees naturally. According to the findings, it is clear that nature itself is having complete control over deforestation.

Coming to the discussion on washing pits or laundry areas, they expressed that they do not have any established area for it but performed these activities besides the springs and these areas are always well maintained, they added.
